H2Global achieves milestone towards the energy transition with Redeker

Germany to import green hydrogen products with H2Global beginning in 2027

Berlin, 15 July 2024. (Berlin, 15 July 2024) The supply agreement concluded on Friday for the import of green hydrogen‑based ammonia marks an important step towards the energy transition. Between 2027 and 2033, at least 259 thousand tonnes of green ammonia, which is to be produced in Egypt using wind and solar energy, will be exported to Germany. Redeker Sellner Dahs served as advisors in the successful award, which serves as a prototype procedure for further tenders.

Hintco GmbH, a subsidiary of the H2Global Foundation, which is poised to further the global market ramp‑up of hydrogen, is acting as a link between producing countries and purchasing countries in the procurement of green hydrogen and its derivatives (e. g. ammonia, methanol). It buys green hydrogen products on the world market and sells them to the highest bidder in Germany and the EU. Possible financial losses in the relationship between purchase and sales prices are to be offset by a subsidy from the German Federal Ministry for Economic Affairs and Climate Action in order to foster the energy transition and achieve climate targets. The supply agreement for the first pilot tendering round at competitive prices therefore constitutes a milestone on the road to climate neutrality.

Redeker Sellner Dahs provided H2Global with comprehensive support from the outset in the conceptualisation of the H2Global model in terms of state aid, corporate, public procurement and antitrust law.

The parties involved also relied on the expertise of Redeker Sellner Dahs in founding the H2Global Foundation and Hintco GmbH as well as protecting the H2Global mark.

The precondition for the start of the first round of tenders was the successful completion of the state aid notification procedure for the first federal grant of EUR 900 million with the European Commission, in which Dr Clemens Holtmann (Redeker Sellner Dahs) advised and represented H2Global and the German authorities. A further round of auctions with funding from the Federal Ministry for Economic Affairs and Climate Action totalling EUR 3.5 billion and co‑financing from the Netherlands are being prepared at present. The Redeker team is once again acting as legal advisors for these auctions.
